Search Engine Optimization: What Should You Do or What Shouldn’t?

At present all web site entrepreneurs want to make their web site properly search engine optimized. This is because most of the people depend upon search engine to find their desired sites. And that’s why webmasters are becoming interested on online promotion of their site through search engine optimization. This is such a process which can make your site visible to search engine when people will search their query through specific keywords.

You can apply both on-page & off-page SEO for your site. On-page refers to the way where you use your keywords in Meta name, site content, title, topic, header, html tags etc. All of them will be available in your web page. For that reason this is called on-page optimization. And off-page optimization refers to the way of promoting your site to search engine through forums, blogs, web 2.0 sites, Facebook, E-mail marketing those are outside to your site.

Now we must know what we should actually do for proper SEO. Otherwise the site will be negatively ranked instead of improvement. At first choose a relevant, popular & easy keyword. There are many tools for choosing keywords among them ‘Google Adwords’ is the best of all. Keywords should be well researched or your investment will be failed. During on-page optimizations please avoid excess use of keywords in content or it’ll bother your visitors.

In off-page optimization most of the SEO experts use wrong ways of optimization. Most of them create fake accounts on forums, blogs etc. & then post a link of his site. Most of these links are deleted by site moderation due to spamming. Besides, spun articles, low quality profile links are also considered as spam by search engines. Only quality content backlink will be helpful for site. So, you should be concern about quality backlinks.

Besides, there are many black hat software & methods that can also make your site highly ranked within a short time. But it’ll be only for a few days. After some days you’ll be caught by Google bot & your site will be punished which make your site negatively ranked & sometimes you may be permanently punished by Google or other search engine.

So, to confirm a proper & quality SEO work you should be conscious about the techniques you’ll apply because the future of your site depends upon your techniques. You should also avoid spamming & black hat techniques for long term optimization.

Keyword selection is the most important piece of information you need to figure out to be successful online. To build a search engine friendly website, you have to have content and that content must be filled with words that would be used to identify your company and its products. Keywords are words that are searched for often on the major search engines. These are important because you want people to easily find your website when they are looking for the type of product you offer.

The first step in the process of keyword selection is finding the right keywords. There is a free tool available on overture for keyword selection, the url is:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Overture is the company that handles Yahoo’s pay-per-click advertising and other programs. This tool will tell you how many times any given keywords were searched for during the period one or two months prior. It can give you a very good idea of what keywords or keyword phrases to optimize your site for by using the free tool above.

You should always try to mix up the popularity of the keywords you choose. The most searched keyword or phrase is important to optimize your website for, but you should choose some lesser searched phrases, as well. This should make it easier for your prospective customers to find you. The lesser searched keywords and phrases are not optimized for as often as the most searched terms and will be much easier for your company to rank well for them.

Once you know what your main keywords are, you need to take one or two keywords and create a page of content based on the keywords you chose. You can do this by writing information on your products. If you offer furniture and hard wood furniture is one of the keyword phrases you have chosen, you should write a page on the quality of the wood you use in your furniture products. By using the term “hard wood furniture” as often as possible, you will be able to show the search engines why you should be ranked for that term. Feel free to scatter your other main keywords throughout the content you write for your website. This can only help you obtain good rankings for those keywords. You must create a page of content for every one or two keywords you want to rank well for.

Once you have content written for your keywords, it is important to have a solid linking structure for the interior of your website. Search Engines look at exterior and interior links to figure out what is important to your customers and help them find you easier. In English, this means that you will rank better by using the correct words inside the hyperlinks used on your website. These words are given extra weight by search engines by being used inside a link. You should include a link to another content page inside of every content page you write that points to a separate content or product page inside of your website.

The last, and possibly the most important, piece of your search engine optimization puzzle must be the exterior links pointing to your website. Major search engines, especially Google, put a very large focus on the words that are used to link to your website from other web pages. It is also important to obtain links from “authority” sites. A relevant site’s link is worth much more than a site that has nothing to do with what your company does. By following the simple steps above, you will be on your way to better search engine rankings for the most important keywords.

How does one obtain listed on the dmoz or the Open Directory Project? The dmoz is an eventuated blessed directory that lists sites and links to explicit websites on the World Wide Web. This list, which is called dmoz to define its artistic field name, directory.mozilla.org, is owned by Netscape and is maintained by a set of editors who have volunteered their services. The dmoz ODP is and called the largest human-directory on the web.

A consubstantial list was launched by AT&T and was called the Anywho directory. The Anywho directory is a telephone directory that can be commence online and is linked with the Yellow Pages of the according to company. The Anywho directory is a searchable telephone build and superscription database past the dmoz is a current slanting of sites according to category. Both directories are searchable, but that is where the similarities end. Getting listed on both directories, the Anywho directory and the dmoz, requires overly mismatched guidelines and requirements now they are two fully contradistinctive directories.

Getting listed on the Anywho directory is as homely as having a telephone craft with AT&T. These telephone interject listings are intent from the company’s records and are updated every three months on the online Anywho directory. While the counsel on the Anywho directory of AT&T lists phone numbers of registered individuals and businesses, practiced are options for humans who get not yearning their encircle to be shown in the Anywho Directory. Logging in on the Anywho directory station and organism asset of their privacy oblique process consign help those who yearning their phone incorporate to outlast hermetic get done related a status. There is and an choice on the Anywho directory for horde to headway to the brochure if they demand to by using the close privacy indirect commotion to conflicting the removal.

Getting listed on the OPD or the dmoz is a largely unrelated motion as compared to the slanted deed for the Anywho directory. Website owners conclusively have to submit their website details to the editors of the dmoz for try and inclusion to the list. While the Anywho directory gets the network from their burden database, the dmoz OPD gets its report for these residence listings from the whistle stop owners and contrastive sources. Publication and inclusion in the register is matter to the volunteer editors’ perusal and approval. Often, suggesting a corner for inclusion in the inventory and acceptance known may produce a extended look-in depending on the conglomerate of your residence and the backlog that the set may have appurtenant to the unqualified introduce of suggestions.

The simple stirring for site submission for experiment to the list involves four steps. Initially, you have to have information whether a point should certainly be listed and is not today listed on the ODP. Next is great which combination prime describes or fits the website you are suggesting for inclusion. After these prime three steps, you will thus infatuation to fill out the author on the dmoz abode on the party you buy best describes the compass you are suggesting. Approval for inclusion in the record may depend on the editors’ right with the power of final, also depend on the receiving of volunteer editors the spot currently has deal for them.

Every website listed in the search engines has a position, or ‘ranking’, and each one of these rankings can change very quickly, in some cases as often as weekly or even daily. One day your website’s in a good position, then the next you’re wondering what happened to it. Staying on top of this situation is a must for any SEO professional – you need to become a search engine ninja. If that’s what you want to do, then you need to keep these things in mind at all times:

1. Good SEO requires frequent updates and ranking checks.

You might have a good spot today, but all it takes is for a few new sites to open, and before you know it you’re back down at the bottom. If you pay attention to your rankings, then you have a shot at fixing things that go wrong before your rankings fall too far.

2. You should check all your links weekly to make sure they work.

Maintain high-quality, relevant reciprocal links and check them weekly to make sure they’re working. Remove any dead links, as search engine crawlers may mark you down if they find them on your site.

3. Tweak and assess your website on a daily basis.

You need to continually assess and tweak your listing to keep your site in its proper place – that is, at the top. This ensures that your site is in the best position possible, and helps you keep your competitive edge.

4. Maintain the content on your website.

Update your content weekly at the very least, to make sure that search engine crawlers come back frequently. Even the smallest changes will be picked up on by the search engines and will help to maintain your ranking. If you can’t write, find someone who can: you need content.

5. Keep up-to-date with the latest developments in SEO.

If you can’t decide what you should be doing or you don’t want to keep up with SEO on your own, you could consider hiring a specialist. Consulting with an SEO specialist will still allow you to make your own changes to your website and learn which things work best, but you’ll have someone to answer your questions if you need them.

You should review your SEO techniques at least every few months, to see how the algorithms have changed and to devise new plans and strategies for increasing your rankings based on those changes. Any SEO ninja will tell you that there are only really two major search engines that you need to worry about: Google and Yahoo. You can do well even if you only have the time or energy to focus on these two engines. Being an SEO ninja is hard work, but it can be very rewarding if you’ve got the dedication for it.

Search Engine Optimization is basically a research work to rank high in search engines. It is a research work because the ranking of a site keeps changing according to the various algorithms of various search engines. There are many Search Engine Optimization Company working in this area. An optimizers needs to keep a constant eye on these algorithms, study them and optimize their sites accordingly. Thus a SEO has a lot to study as there are so much search engines with their own algorithms. The most popular of these search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN, Alta-Vista, Lycos etc.

Google Algorithms and Updates

Google is considered as king of Search Engines. It has most the most confidential and complex algorithm ever yet. Beyond, Search Engine Ranking Position [SERPs], it gives Page Rank to every site depending upon their back links. Still, it doesn’t not allow you to increase your back links by any other means. Google updates their algorithms after sometimes and that algorithm update is considered very important among the optimizers. The recent algorithm update of Google ended up in December 2005 and was known as Jagger Update. It was the first update after Florida, which occur in November, 2003.

Google Sandbox

Those sites, which uses unethical means to get good SERPs are banned or penalized by Google. One such penalty is Google sandbox. It is still not sure that whether Google Sandbox exits or it is just an assumption. Whatever it may be, this has been assumed that Google Sandbox is an algorithm which Google use to penalize any site. Once a site is in Sandbox, it can be suffer in various ways, like:

The site is removed from Google SERPS, and Googlebot stops crawling or indexing it.

The site gets crawled and but doesn’t appear in the SERPs.

The site can get sand-boxed on only one or few keywords, though the site gets regularly crawled and remain on SERPs for other keywords.

Only few pages of the site can get sand-boxed while the other being treated normally by Google.

Page Rank is Googles way of showing the user a basic ranking of a webpage. The ranking is from 0 to 10 with 10 being the highest. To calculate page rank there are numerous variables involved but the most important in link popularity. So the more incoming links you have to that webpage the higher Page Rank you will have.

Page Rank is updated all the time but not visible to users. The visible Page Rank on the Google toolbar is only updated a few times a year. Normally every 3 months. There are a few ways that you can get a general idea of your Page Rank at all times. One way requires the site to be listed in the Google directory. It has become known that the directory lists in order of Page Rank. The directory uses current Page Rank data and not the visible one that only updates every 3 months. So if you have a site in the Google directory you can always get a general idea on what your current Page Rank is.

There are also Page Rank predictor tools out there. Now these tools used to be somewhat accurate but they have been shutdown with Google changing the PK parameters to all 0s. This may change again in the future but as of right now it simply does not work.

One thing that gets me is how Page Rank consumes people that are new to the SEO world. To get a few things straight here is what Page Rank does for your. NOTHING! You do not rank higher in the SERPs, make more money, get more traffic, or look cooler. This number is just a basic guideline of how many incoming links you have to your site.

But Page Rank is good for a few things at the same time. Most webmasters base link exchanges primarily based off of Page Rank. So the higher Page Rank you have the better chance of getting a good link exchange. Also it is good for selling links on your site. The price pretty much always reflects what the Page Rank is on the page.

Google, being the largest and most used search engine and is extremely important to optimize your website for. As a matter of fact, if you optimize your website just for Google you’d find your rankings in Yahoo! and MSN will jump up higher than your ranking in Google. I’ve optimized many websites that show up in at least the top 20 listings in Google and found that in each case they ranked higher in Yahoo! and MSN usually in the top 3 positions with most in the number one spots.

Most everyone agrees that with Google content is king. So writing good copy with just the right amount of keyword phrases, for keyword density is important. And natural anchor text links is second to the throne, which takes lots of work and proper timing to do properly.

Third in line are keyword phrases (notice I said phrase because single keywords are almost impossible to optimize for), which need to be researched to find the right phrase for you and not used to often in the content/text to get the right density. Used to often and you’ll hurt your ranking.

Fourth in line are the Meta Description Tag which when used properly can actually bring visitors to your website who wouldn’t normally come there. Of course there are several other factors involved with getting that elusive number one spot.

But what most everyone often overlooks is what I call the fifth element which Google uses to determine their ranking of a website and that’s the domain name.

People, even SEO companies, don’t either know the importance of the domain name to Google or take the time to chose the proper name for the website. Most just use their company name or what they conceder a “Cool” name for their websites. Now, unless your company is well known or at least well known in its field, using a basically unknown company name is pointless. Even more pointless is the “Cool” name.

The entire reason you optimize your website is to get visitors from search engines, so why not use all the tools available to get the best ranking possible for your website.

Use your domain name as one of those tools. Instead of your company name or the “Cool” one, use a keyword phrase, one that describes your product or service. Take your time in choosing the proper name. Make sure that it will work best for your website. If you not sure ask your friends and relatives what keywords they would use to find your product or services on the Internet. You might be surprised at what they would use.

You have the keyword phrase that you know will work. But before you jump online and get that domain name there are a couple of things you may still need to do.

Let’s say you’re the owner of Mike’s Bikes and you specialize in Colorado Mountain Bikes so you figure to kill two birds with one stone and use the domain name mikescoloradomountainbikes.com to keep your name in it along with using the keyword phrase. Now this might make sense to you but you’re not Google. You’re not going to like it but you need to drop the mikes out of the name because it’s dead weight.

So now you’ve got coloradomountainbikes.com but wait before you burn up the keyboard use Colorado-mountain-bikes.com instead. Why? Because Google sees this as three different words and would see coloradomountainbikes.com as a single word. When people are doing a search they will not be using coloradomountainbikes, they are going to use Colorado mountain bikes. The bonus is that your domain name now becomes a keyword phrase used by Google when it performs a search.

SEO is undisputedly the best method for generating traffic and profits. That being said, you need to understand the inherent conflict that can arise with SEO.

Conflicting SEO Expectations

SEO is both the technical effort and art of getting your site ranked highly in search results on Google, Yahoo and MSN. There are two competing factors in the effort, time and volume of traffic, which can lead to clients having unreasonable expectations.

The conflict giving rise to misunderstood SEO expectations deal with keywords. Obviously, an optimization program is designed to get you high in the rankings on various keywords. The problem, of course, is the more traffic a keyword produces, the higher the number of sites competing for rankings under the phrase. Inevitably, this translates to a longer period of time required to get top rankings.

Obviously, most clients want to obtain top rankings as quickly as possible. The best way to do this is identify those keywords that have decent traffic, but few sites competing for rankings. In such a campaign, clients see results relatively quickly, but they have fallen into a trap. Even if they go into the number one position across the top three search engines, they have limited the amount of traffic they can receive. This leads to frustration as revenues are effectively capped.

A proper optimization plan should focus on both short and long term rankings. When laying out the site, the home page and other centralized pages should be devoted to keywords with monstrous amounts of traffic that will require a lot of time to obtain top rankings on. To counterbalance this, additional pages should be built focusing on keywords for which there is less traffic, but for which high rankings can be acquired relatively quickly.

The exact time periods on this approach are entirely dependent on the subject matter of the site and the keywords involved. For a brand new site, one can expect to see rankings on MSN within a month, Yahoo in four to six months and Google in six to nine months. For an established site, the figures will be shorter but it is dependent upon the results of the keyword research in the specific field.

Understanding optimization is the key to having reasonable SEO expectations. A mix of short and long term goals is the best method of attack in nearly every situation.

Search engine optimization is not as difficult the way many people make it out to be. It seems mysterious, but let me reveal how this simple thing can be done without a line of code, without breaking any law, and still generate a ton of extra traffic to your site.

Basically, search engine optimization is about getting higher rankings. But that’s beside the point. That’s the end result of what you DO that actually gets you those rankings. In Singapore SEO trainings are hardly seen but I often do it for my clients on a private basis.

There are basically 5 things you need to do in order to accomplish better search engine rankings, even if you are complete novice at it. I call these the 5 Pillars of search engine optimization.

Pillar #1 – Multiple Backlinks

Create as many links back to your site as possible. How? You can use submission software that post to multiple websites all at the same time. I prefer to use those that are a little more reputable and I do not spam, especially blogs. Backlinks can come easily, but you will need to do it properly to prevent the backlack. The easiest way to do it is to collect a list of places where you can submit to. I have a directory listing of ping servers that you can find at www.StuartFreeTools.com. That should get you started. The rest need to be Googled as “submit your url” or “submit your article”. The more backlinks, the better.

Pillar #2 – Frequency

Even if you are building backlinks, you need to have a regular frequency. If possible, every day, if not every other day. You need to be consistent in your efforts to build backlinks. Now, this may be tedious, but it probably won’t take you more than an hour a day to maintain this. You don’t have to write articles at all. You only need a robot that works 24/7 for you. I’ve got some recommendations that I’ve put up on my blog at www.InternetMarketingSingapore.com/blog and you can see how in Singapore, SEO elements are just as easily implemented by me compared with experts who have many years of experience.

Pillar #3 – Multiple Hosting Accounts

I recommend this because search engines look at IP addresses. with multiple hosting accounts, you get better inbound links from your own site. If you’re smart, you’ll start creating a whole ton of these to boost your own link popularity from other sites.

Pillar #4 – Important Sites

If you haven’t already, Brad Callen’s SEO Elite has a great way of better optimizing high PageRank links. PageRank is Google’s way of tracking how important you are. For SEO purposes, around PR 2 or 3 should be sufficient for your needs. Get backlinks from these sites.

Pillar #5 – Onpage structure

Your onpage structure is very important. If a search engine is visiting you, it won’t spend an hour online. It will be done in a matter of seconds, so you really ought to see how far you can go with this. Ensure you have proper meta titles, utilizing H1 and H2 tags effectively, and of course, anchor text within your site. Make sure you have links into your web page on the first index page of your site. I highly recommend you use blogs for such an endeavor because most of these are already optimized for you. Remember – you are always optimizing for keywords, so those MUST appear on your page for search engines to find you.

Here are the three things you must do.

First, make regular attempts to create backlinks (not reciprocal links) with other sites. Leave genuine comments on blogs, post into classified directories, submit your articles to various sites, whatever it takes. Do this as regularly as possible.

Second, ensure you have solid content. People will want to link to you because your content is good. So I recommend that you either write your own or ask someone to build it for you at one of the freelancer sites like www.elance.com.

Third, maintain consistency in what you do. 1 a day for 100 days is very different from 100 a day posts on your website. Beware because search engines treat the latter as spamdexing.

SEO doesn’t take forever, but it requires a wee bit of patience. The Singapore SEO market, for instance, is pretty easy to dominate. But that’s because you have niche keywords that you are optimizing for with very little competition. In other markets, it’s not like the Singapore SEO market because you’ve got very competitive phrases, and that might take a bit longer. Whatever the case, consistency wins out in the end, so start right now!
